The Mindful Dancer: Why Taking Time for Yourself is Essential for Success
When competition season approaches, students often find themselves struggling to manage their busy schedules. Between exams, rehearsals, schoolwork among other responsibilities being placed on the youth of today, it can be challenging for young dancers to prioritise self-care and mental health.
Many students find themselves neglecting their nutrition and general downtime to relax & unwind and this can have serious consequences. No exam or competition is worth compromising mental health and it is crucial for dancers to take time for themselves every week to focus on keeping their mind and body healthy & happy.
We recommend students set aside 20 minutes each week to not only set up their goals for the week but also to schedule downtime. This is just as important to ensure balance is maintained. They should schedule time to go to the movies with friends or go shopping; whatever makes them feel relaxed and happy. If they are unable to find this time in their schedule, then they need to take a look at their responsibilities.
Unfortunately, many dancers neglect this aspect of their lives, and I was no exception. During my full-time years of dancing, I suffered from an eating disorder that led to burnout and depression, ultimately causing me to give up dancing entirely just as I was becoming a professional dancer. However, I eventually learned the importance of balance and downtime away from the studio. I began prioritising myself and my needs to perform at my best in all aspects of my life and work.
It is essential to remember that dance is just one aspect of a student’s life. While it may be a significant passion, allowing it to consume their entire being can be detrimental to mental and physical health.
