This exercise aims to improve students understanding of maintaining posture and hip alignment while performing port de bras. The exercise ball gives the students receive feedback on their hip alignment, which is crucial in ballet.
Preparation: To begin students should lie on the mat with their legs positioned over the back of the exercise ball keeping them hip width apart (or slightly closer for those with hyperextension). The legs are externally rotated. The ball is close to the groin with the feet are in dorsiflexion. For added support students can roll the end of their mat and place it under their neck.
Steps:
1. Instruct students to move into the bridge position and point their feet in the introduction.
2. Guide them through the port de bras from 1st position into 2nd position while ensuring the proper alignment is maintained.
3. They then flow the arms from 3rd to position towards the side. The first two arm changes should be done slightly quickly while inhaling and exhaling throughout 3rd transition which is slower. Students should coordinate their head and eye movement with their arms.
4. Repeat the combination of port de bras and breathing starting on the side this time.
5. Students open their arms before lowering your hips and flexing your feet.
6. They bridge again, repeating the port de bras sequence starting towards the opposite side.
Important Focus: Pay attention to the students hip alignment and posture throughout the entire exercise.
