What is Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)?

Progressing Ballet Technique is a conditioning system designed to improve ballet training through structured strength, proprioception, and muscle memory. The method helps dancers understand what correct technique feels like, so they can apply it more consistently in class.

PBT is designed to complement ballet class and enhance the dancer's ability to perform with strength, efficiency, and confidence.

HOW PBT SUPPORTS BALLET TRAINING:

Technical consistency
Clearer correction pathways
Safer strength development
Long-term dancer progression

What Teachers Say

I have been a certified level 3 teacher with this program for a few years now. I am thoroughly impressed with the care and detail in the devising of exercises and the support given to teachers when we need clarification or help with specific students. The results are able to be seen in students as they begin to join up their thinking in terms of muscle engagement, breathing, technique and performance. Choosing to explore Progressing Ballet Technique is one of the best decisions I’ve made and has expanded my knowledge so much in the process.

I love PBT! I earned my level 1 certification 3 years ago. I first learned about PBT 8 years ago from a previous employer who was PBT certified and taught a weekly PBT class to the ballet students at her dance studio. I started taking her class and fell in love with it, despite how challenging it was to me at the time. I actually loved the fact that it was challenging because I knew it would get me stronger. I have been teaching dance to gymnasts for the past two years, and have seen first-hand how PBT can be used to cross-train athletes. I truly wish PBT had existed when I was a young dancer, because I believe it could have given me the tools to improve at a faster rate. I believe PBT’s future is bright!

Since doing the PBT workshop, I have been teaching 4 classes a week at our local dance school LSSDance in Mansfield VIC. Dancing children with scoliosis, knee pain and general growth-spurt discomforts have really benefited from weekly PBT classes. Thank you to you and your team.

I loved the PBT certification program! I took an online certification workshop and it was wonderful. I felt like I was still able to fully understand and execute all of the material, from the comfort of my own space. We have one PBT certified teacher in the area and she encouraged me to seek certification myself. My students are already benefiting from the material I learned and I’m excited to be offering classes in the summer to help our dancers prepare for the next season! Thank you so much for this work.

I have been happily and productively using PBT in all my ballet conditioning and technique classes. I teach a span of ages and levels all the way from Pre-Ballet through Advanced/Professional adults. I have attended several in-person workshops (all actually given by Marie) and enjoy and benefit from all the online resources. I would love to eventually attend another in-person workshop in the near future! Thank you for all you do, and Happy Dancing!

I took the Level 1 PBT workshop in Barcelona with Regina and was amazed by the quality of the information. Although I don’t come from a dance background and I specialize in Pilates, there was a lot of information that helped me understand how to perform different movements, especially when working on external rotation. It was very interesting for working on joint alignment and activating deep muscles. Regina is a great educator. She explains each exercise with great precision, teaches how to prepare the body for some senior or advanced exercises, and also provides progressions for some junior exercises to make them more challenging. Highly recommended!

I think PBT is the best thing since Pilates as I was a Pilates teacher first (and regularly exercising the method during my dancing career) and can now implement both methods in teaching our students at the International ballet school in Stockholm.

Had a fabulous workshop in Birmingham UK today! Such a lovely, knowledgeable teacher. I absolutely loved watching the demonstration of the exercises. Coming from a contemporary, ballet, dance and pilates background I can really see how PBT will help my own practice in terms of looking after my body as a teacher for longevity but also for teaching my BTEC and A Level Students at College. PBT will be great in helping my students understand safe, correct technique and muscle activation. I’m really excited to start my PBT journey!

The Level 2 training with Bev was fabulous. I loved how she discussed the progression of each exercise and how we can modify to change the level of difficulty. She was very thorough in her discussion and demonstration and gave us lovely examples of how she has used the exercises with her students. It is always a pleasure to engage with the PBT tutors and curriculum.

For me the most important things that I can teach my ballet students are the proper use of the back, hips and turn out. I love that the exercises of PBT focus on these very qualities. The PBT system created by Marie Walton-Mahon provides the proprioception that is required to understand how ballet is both initiated and shaped. It’s not just a matter of making a dancer stronger, they need to be specifically stronger to aid in their training. The exercises of PBT help a dancer to understand, physically and intellectually, the movements of classical dance. I’m so happy to be able to share them with my students!
