This exercise is specifically designed for pre-professional and professional dancers to refine the artistry and functionality of their upper body movements. It focuses on developing the flexibility, strength, and stability of the muscles in the back, essential for executing a tension-free and expressive port de bras. Using a fit ball provides immediate feedback on hip alignment, aiding in the correction of postural imbalances.
Preparation:
Ensure the dancer's foot is placed on demi-pointe, pressing into the mat with the heel against the wall. The fit ball size should correspond to the length of the dancer's torso to facilitate proper engagement. The mat can be rolled underneath the wrists is more support is required.
Steps:
1. Begin by kneeling close to the wall, rolling over the fit ball to stabilise the supporting leg in rotation against the wall. Cue the students to keep the elbow on the supporting side relaxed and the shoulders oriented downwards and outwards for spine mobility.
2. Instruct the students to practise port de bras separately, focusing on activating the back muscles fully.
3. Once confident, have the students progress to including a full port de bras in retiré position, followed by a développé à la seconde with the full port de bras. Each section should be perfected before moving to the next, with deep breathing throughout to prevent rib flaring.
Focus:
Highlight the need for a light feeling on the fit ball to avoid sinking into the hip. Shoulder girdles should remain broad and open, facilitating fluid and coordinated movements.
