This exercise enhances the grace and fluidity of arm movements, through expanding the upper back and maintaining proper arm rotation and back muscle engagement. This exercise helps dancers develop the delicate and precise arm positions integral to ballet's aesthetic.
Preparation: Ensure students are positioned on the fit ball in en croix, with the right leg bent and rotated, and the left leg extended in a dégagé devant.
Steps:
1. Initiate with a preparatory port de bras from 1st to 4th position.
2. Guide students through an épaulement, followed by a circular port de bras, emphasising the stability of the pelvis and the elongation of the lumbar spine.
3. Instruct students to move the fit ball forward as the left leg transitions into a passé derrière, placing the foot flat on the floor, while adjusting the arms into a 3rd arabesque cambré.
4. Facilitate recovery with a passé to devant, bringing the body upright as arms transition back to 4th position.
5. Have students repeat this sequence and reset to repeat on the opposite side.
Focus:
Stress the importance of expanding the upper back and maintaining arm rotation and back muscle engagement for refined arm shapes.
