This exercise is designed to enhance students' abdominal muscle activation while maintaining hip alignment. It also includes an extra focus on activating the intrinsic foot muscles. As an extension of the original "Climbing Stairs" exercise, it adds complexity and depth to the core and footwork training.
Preparation: Have students lie on the mat with a half-inflated fusion ball underneath their sacrum.
Steps:
1. When the music starts, instruct students to slowly raise their legs into a tabletop position.
2. Guide them to paddle their feet, emphasising the rolling through the metatarsals. Start with the right foot and alternate feet for four extensions, simulating climbing stairs.
3. The left leg should finish at the top. Then, they reverse the movement to 'climb down'.
4. Repeat the sequence four times, ensuring students maintain correct alignment and abdominal engagement throughout.
Focus: Emphasise maintaining hip alignment and strong abdominal engagement. Ensure students roll through their metatarsals correctly.
