This exercise aims to refine students' lateral arm movement with a focus on maintaining proper hip alignment. It develops a dancer's ability to coordinate head, arm, and finger movements smoothly without compromising posture.
Preparation:Position the student in front of a fit ball against the wall, sitting with legs crossed. Ensure their neck is relaxed.
Steps:
1. Students begin by raising their head gently.
2. Lead the right hand directly to the side, keeping the ischial tuberosities (sit bones) grounded and shoulders open against the ball.
3. Stress the importance of a relaxed rib cage and aligned head movement.
4. Guide them to return to a neutral position, relaxing the neck and turning the head to the left.
5. Repeat on the left side.
6. On the third repetition, incorporate a full arm movement in port de bras de côté with the right arm, followed by the left.
Focus: Ensure even grounding of the sit bones and open shoulders against the fit ball.
