This is a foundational exercise to get students ready for pointe work, focusing on the alignment and strength needed for good pointe technique. It emphasises proper foot alignment and the distribution of weight on the metatarsals. This is crucial for developing the strength and flexibility required for pointe work. Using a lacrosse ball enhances students' understanding of ankle alignment, ensuring they're prepared for pointe work both physically and technically.
Preparation: Ensure students have a barre and a lacrosse ball. Emphasise the importance of correct posture and alignment before starting.
Steps:
1. Instruct students to hold the lacrosse ball between their legs just above their ankles to enhance alignment during the élevé (rise).
2. Guide them to rise onto the metatarsal heads with maximal plantar flexion at the ankle and tarsal joints, and dorsiflexion at the metatarsophalangeal joints.
3. Remind them to aim for a 90-degree passive dorsiflexion of the big toe.
4. Stress the importance of a straight line between the first and second metatarsals.
5. Begin with 4 slow rises, maintaining alignment and posture.
6. Gradually increase the repetitions up to 16.
Focus: Toes should be relaxed and evenly spread on the floor. Students should lightly touch the barre with their fingertips, focusing on upright posture.
