This exercise is designed to enhance the foundational ballet movement, the temps levé, by focusing on strengthening the calf, Achilles tendon, and soleus muscle. This exercise is multifaceted, not only targeting physical strengthening but also incorporating dynamic musicality training. It aims to develop the controlled, explosive power needed for a temps levé while teaching dancers to synchronize their movements with music. This combination ensures dancers achieve technical precision and artistic expression in their performance.
Preparation: Position students with their left hand on the ballet barre, slightly in front. Place the right calf muscle on a fit ball, encouraging foot alignment with the ball's curve. Ensure students maintain hip alignment is facing front and both legs are rotated outward.
Steps:
1. Have students begin with port de bras to 4th position on counts 1, 2, 3, followed by a plié (fondu) on count 4.
2. Cue relevé and hold for counts 1, 2, then plié (fondu) on count 3, and perform a temps levé on count 4. Have students repeat this sequence in the devant position two more times.
3. Cue a pivot (promenade) to face the barre on counts 5, 6, 7, adjusting the leg to à la seconde on count 8, then repeat the temps levé in à la seconde.
4. Cue another pivot to alternate side into arabesque, adjusting port de bras to match the arabesque alignment, and repeat the temps levé.
5. Cue another pivot past the barre to return to devant, perform a plié with the supporting leg, and extend the working leg into attitude. Execute full port de bras, returning to 4th position, and repeat the last movement.
6. Have students conclude with an relevé and balance with port de bras into 5th position.
Focus: Emphasise maintaining hip alignment, outward rotation of both legs, and precise coordination between movements and musical counts.
