This exercise aims to improve coordination between the head, eye line and arm movements during port de bras. It's a way to develop graceful and fluid arm movements, which is essential for ballet.
Preparation: Have students sit in the centre of the exercise ball with their feet flat and hip width apart on the floor in parallel. They should gently place their hands on the sides of the ball holding either flowers, flags or or alternately simply using flowing port de bras.
Tips:
1. Guide students to shift their weight while maintaining proper pelvic alignment. The right foot should roll forward from the ball of their foot to a stretched position while simultaneously directing the gaze to follow the movement of the right flowers or simply with flowing arms towards the right side of their body.
2. Repeat the movement on the opposite side.
3. Progress by having both feet rise onto demi pointe while coordinating both arms in a floating motion up and down (adjusting head and eye direction accordingly).
4. Repeat this step with both arms and feet rising onto demi pointe.
5. Start again. This time begin with the left foot and arm.
Focus: Make sure to maintain pelvic alignment throughout and the student coordinates smooth movements between their feet, arms, head and eyes.
