This exercise aims to help students improve their understanding of proper weight distribution and the muscles used in turnout. It focuses on achieving balance and alignment from the head all the way to the toes, which is crucial for ballet technique.


Preparation: Position the student sideways at the barre, placing their right foot on the fusion ball in à la seconde. Make sure they maintain good turnout and posture.


Steps:

1. Start with a movement of the arms from 1st to 2nd position.

2. Teach them to rise up onto their toes (elevé), emphasising placing their weight over the front of their foot and rolling their working foot towards the top of the fusion ball.

3. Guide them to lower their heel and adjust their working foot.

4. Incorporate a fondu (plié) and then return to standing position, repeating this sequence two more times.

5. For promenade, pivot towards the barre, aligning hips and shoulders while performing a port de bras.

6. Repeat rising up onto toes (elevé), lowering down, fondu and derrière. Three times in total.

7. Pivot back to à la seconde, perform a full port de bras, ending with arms low.

8. Remember to repeat everything on the opposite side.


Focus: Pay attention to ensure the students maintain a straight line from knee to ankle towards second toe. Watch for even pressure on all toes and activation of the ankles.
