This exercise plays an important role in teaching students about how weight is distributed for balance. It specifically focuses on the alignment of the legs and feet, while also developing coordinated movements of the arms.
Preparation: Start by having the student sit in the centre of the exercise ball, with their legs positioned in 1st position. Encourage them to maintain a long and straight spine.
Steps:
1. Students begin with a graceful movement flow of the arms from 1st to 2nd position, following along with the music.
2. Weight is shifted smoothly to the side while the working leg is lifted into a coupé position and bringing it forward into attitude devant. At the same time, the left arm moves into 3rd position.
3. Important that both the leg and arms move simultaneously, maintaining coordination with the head and eye line. The students slowly release with their fingertips and return back to 1st position. Re-centre the weight on the exercise ball.
4. Repeat these steps on the opposite side and then incorporate port de bras into 4th position.
Focus: Pay close attention to how the student aligns their legs and feet throughout each movement.
